Founded by Johanna Hovelle in late 2018 in Berlin, Germany, 1331 began with a clear intention: to build a brand that is authentic and feels good from inside out. From the very beginning, the vision was to create a sustainable, fair and eco conscious company. One that sources high quality ingredients, works with hand picked manufacturer and helps keep artisan craftsmanship alive through objects of depth, purpose and quiet beauty.

The name 1331 is rooted in numerology. Added together, the numbers equal number 8, a number that has long held personal meaning for Johanna. Including it in the brand was a natural part of shaping a project close to her heart.

The brand started small. Johanna always had a deep interest in natural botanicals and traditional remedies for physical and mental wellbeing. Drawn to the subtle power of scent, she began creating blends for friends and family. Small, thoughtful compositions designed to soothe, uplift and bring comfort to everyday moments.

The response was warm and immediate. What began as a personal passion soon revealed itself as something bigger. Encouraged by this early connection, Johanna turned her vision into a brand.

In the first years, 1331 was present at the weekly Kollwitzmarkt in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg. There, the brand found its first loyal customers and grew through direct feedback, honest exchange and a shared appreciation for craft, scent, and conscious living. This closeness to the customer helped shape the collection from the very beginning.
